2.15 m meters illegal fishing nets seized near St.Mrtin’s

DHAKA, June 22, 2026 (BSS)-The Coast Guard has seized huge illegal foreign-made current nets worth about Taka 32 crore and arrested six alleged smugglers during an operation in the western maritime area of St. Martin's Island.

The information was disclosed in a press release issued today by Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon.

According to the statement, acting on a tip-off, the Coast Guard Station at Saint Martin's conducted a special operation at around 11pm on Saturday. During the operation, a suspicious boat was signaled to stop, but it ignored the order and attempted to flee toward deeper waters.

A Coast Guard team pursued the vessel and successfully intercepted it in the deep sea. A subsequent search of the boat led to the recovery of approximately 2.15 million meters of illegal foreign current nets allegedly smuggled from Myanmar. 

The seized nets are estimated to be worth about Taka 32 crore.

The operation also resulted in the arrest of six alleged smugglers from the boat.

The Coast Guard official said legal proceedings against the detainees are underway and the seized nets and the boat used in the smuggling have been taken into custody.

The media officer added that the Coast Guard will continue such operations in the future to prevent smuggling and protect the country's fisheries resources.
