MADARIPUR, June 19, 2026 (BSS) - Anisur Rahman Khokon Talukder, lawmaker for Madaripur-3 constituency and central BNP assistant mass education secretary today said the government is implementing a range of development programmes including river erosion prevention measures to safeguard people's basic rights and improve their living standards.
He made the remarks while inaugurating geo-bag dumping work to protect vulnerable riverbanks from erosion in the Khunerchar Nutan Bazar area of Bashgari Union under Kalkini upazila this morning.
Speaking as the chief guest, Khokon Talukder said the government has undertaken various public welfare initiatives in line with the electoral commitments of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The programmes include river erosion control, canal excavation, introduction of family card and farmer card, allowances for imams and athletes and crop insurance schemes, he said.
"The main objective of the government is to improve the quality of life of the people and ensure their fundamental rights," he added.
The lawmaker said directives have already been issued to urgently dump geo-bags in erosion-prone areas across his constituency.
"After receiving reports of erosion in the Khunerchar area, I personally visited the site and immediately took steps to begin the protection work," he said.
Khokon Talukder also said efforts are underway to secure emergency funds within this month to implement preventive measures in other affected areas facing river erosion.
He sought cooperation from all sections of society to help reduce the suffering of people living in erosion-hit areas.
Kalkini Upazila BNP president and freedom fighter Fazlul Haque Bepari, general secretary Mahbub Hossain Munshi, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Saif-ul Arefin, Jubo Dal leader Mamun Shikder and local BNP leaders and activists attended the programme.
