Naval Police detains 129 in week-long nationwide drives

DHAKA, June 18, 2026 (BSS) - Naval Police detained 129 people and seized a large quantity of illegal fishing equipment, fish and fish fry during nationwide drives conducted over the past week.

The law enforcers seized 169,800,335 metres of illegal fishing nets, 5,302 kilograms of fish, 305,000 shrimp larvae, 110,000 fish fry, 710 kilograms of jelly-treated shrimp and 246 kilograms of colour-mixed shing fish during the drives, said a press release today.

The Naval Police also destroyed 146 brush piles illegally set up in rivers.

As part of the operations, cases were filed in river courts against 10 bulkhead vessels for failing to produce valid documents, while one dredger was seized.

A total of 60 cases were filed during the period, including 37 under fisheries laws, eight for reckless speed violations, five related to illegal sand extraction, two narcotics cases, five unnatural death cases, one robbery case, one abduction case and one murder case.

The Naval Police recovered nine bodies from different areas during the week.

The seized illegal fishing nets and jelly-treated shrimp were destroyed, while the fish fry were released into water bodies. The remaining fish were distributed among orphanages, the release added.
