CHATTOGRAM, June 18, 2026 (BSS) - Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain said that efforts to resolve waterlogging in the city will not succeed unless citizens also take responsibility for waste management alongside ongoing government initiatives.

He made the remarks while inaugurating excavation works of several canals, including Dome Canal in Chandgaon Ward No. 4 in the Bahaddarhat area, Sunnia Madrasah Canal in West Sholashahar Ward No. 7, Sadar Canal, Ananya Residential Canal in Panchlaish Ward No. 3 near the Oxygen area, and Chashma Canal adjacent to Textile Bridge in Shulakbahar Ward No. 8 today.

The mayor said the city corporation is continuously undertaking cleaning and excavation of canals and drains, but improper disposal of garbage into waterways is undermining the effectiveness of these efforts.

"In order to free Chattogram from waterlogging, we are implementing a comprehensive programme to restore canals and drains across the city. Through excavation and cleaning, we are ensuring the smooth flow of water so that rainwater can drain quickly during the monsoon," he said.

He stressed that a coordinated effort between the city corporation and residents is essential for building a cleaner and more livable city.

Public awareness and cooperation would not only help eliminate waterlogging but also support environmental protection and urban management he said.

CCC Chief Cleaning Officer Captain Ikhtiar Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Deputy Chief Cleaning Officer Pranab Kumar Sharma, officials and employees of the city corporation and local ward representatives were present on the occasion.
