DHAKA, June 18, 2026 (BSS) - Shahbagh Police have arrested a man from Tangail on charges of embezzling money by falsely promising a job as a police constable.
The arrestee was identified as Md. Ershad Akand, 38.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Niaz Mehdi of the Media and Public Relations Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) disclosed the information in a press release issued today.
According to police, on Monday afternoon, Md. Ershad Akand, while sitting at a hotel in the capital's Shahbagh area, introduced himself as a close relative of State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku.
He allegedly collected a total of Tk 841,000 from a person after promising to secure a job for the latter's son as a police constable.
Later, he failed to provide the promised job.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim, a regular case was lodged with Shahbagh Police Station.
Subsequently, acting on a tip-off, a team of Shahbagh Police conducted a raid in the Bhuapur Police Station area of Tangail district early today and arrested Md. Ershad Akand.
Police said further legal proceedings in connection with the incident are underway.
