National Tea Day to be celebrated in Sreemangal on Saturday

DHAKA, June 18, 2026 (BSS) – 'National Tea Day-2026' will be celebrated on Saturday (June 20) in Sreemangal, with the presentation of the ‘National Tea Award 2026’ recognising outstanding contributions to the country’s tea industry.

The programme has been organised by the Bangladesh Tea Board and will be held at the Sreemangal Auditorium cum Multipurpose Hall under the theme “Improvement of tea industry, let the economy be green”, said a press release issued today.

Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir is scheduled to inaugurate the event as the chief guest, while the session will be chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Md. Ataur Rahman Khan, NDC.

According to the Bangladesh Tea Board, although National Tea Day is generally observed on May 21, the formal celebration has been rescheduled to June 20 this year. 

The programme will begin at 11am with the inauguration, followed by the screening of a documentary on the tea industry and a discussion session.

Chairman of the Bangladesh Tea Board, Major General Md. Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, will deliver the welcome address.

Moulvibazar-4 MP Alhaj Md. Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury will attend as a special guest, alongside stakeholders and representatives of tea workers.

A key highlight of the event will be the presentation of the National Tea Award 2026 in eight categories.
    
For the first time, a special award will be introduced in the “Best Bought Leaf Tea Factory” category, with trophies and certificates to be handed over by the chief guest.

A tea exhibition featuring the Bangladesh Tea Board and leading tea companies will also be held on the occasion.

Bangladesh currently has 172 tea gardens, with tea cultivation expanding into the northern plains. This year marks the sixth time the National Tea Day celebration is being held in Sreemangal, widely known as the tea capital of the country.
