JU student assault case; BCL leader arrested in Netrokona

JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, June 14, 2026 (BSS) - Police have arrested the prime accused in a case filed over the assault, ransom, forced stripping, video recording and dissemination of a Jahangirnagar University student in Netrokona's Purbadhala Upazila.

The arrested accused, Shishir Ahmed Talukdar Ratul, 22, was apprehended from the Charpara area of Mymensingh city around 11:30 pm on Saturday, police said.

Ratul is the general secretary of Purbadhala Upazila Sadar Union Unit of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League.

According to Purbadhala Police Station Case No. 19 dated June 11, 2026, and police sources, Md. Sharif Hossain Rowshan, 20, a first-year student of the Drama and Dramatics Department of Jahangirnagar University's 54th batch, mistakenly got off at Shaldigha area in Purbadhala while travelling to Netrokona town on June 10. 

As he was walking towards Trimohoni, several individuals allegedly intercepted him and took him to a secluded place. 

The perpetrators assaulted and intimidated the victim before robbing him of Tk 4,560 in cash, Tk 10,000 through mobile financial services, Tk 1,500 from a bKash loan facility and a mobile phone, amounting to a total loss of Tk 16,060.

The victim further alleged that after checking information stored on his mobile phone, the assailants subjected him to further abuse, forced him to make certain statements and slogans in favor of ousted dictator Sheikh Hasina, and recorded a video of him in a stripped condition. The video was later circulated on social media.

Police said the victim filed a case against three to four unidentified persons under Section 394 of the Penal Code and relevant provisions of the Cyber Security Act, 2026.

During the investigation, law enforcers identified Ratul's location through intelligence and information technology-based tracking and subsequently conducted a raid in Mymensingh city to arrest him.

Police claimed that the victim's stolen mobile phone and Tk 4,500 of the looted money were recovered from the accused's possession.

Purbadhala police said efforts are underway to identify and arrest the other individuals involved in the incident. The accused has been sent to court with a prayer for remand for further interrogation.

Officer-in-Charge of Purbadhala Police Station Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun said, "The case is being investigated with utmost importance. We have already identified the other accused and drives will be continued to arrest the rest of the accused."
