Medical student Mahmuda faces financial hardship after admission

RAJSHAHI, June 12, 2026 (BSS) - Mahmuda's home is in Krishnapur village under Panchandar Union of Tanore Upazila in Rajshahi. Her father, Masud Rana, is a roadside tea seller, and her mother, Sayera Bibi, is a housewife.

Masud Rana has two daughters. Mahmuda is the elder one, while the younger daughter, Mim Khatun, is a sixth-grade student.

Mahmuda Khatun achieved a Golden GPA-5 in the SSC examination from Krishnapur High School in 2023 and another Golden GPA-5 in the HSC examination from Krishnapur Adarsha Mohila Degree College in 2025.

Her father, Masud Rana, said that Mahmuda has been passionate about education since childhood.

"Neither my wife nor I are educated. Seeing her enthusiasm for studying, we somehow managed to support her education up to HSC level at local institutions, often sacrificing our own needs. At that time, we could not even afford private tutoring fees."

Although she comes from a poor family, Mahmuda always dreamed of becoming a doctor. Her intelligence and determination have been rewarded by the grace of Almighty Allah.

Masud Rana said, "I earn only Tk 400 to Tk 500 a day by selling tea at my small village shop. Even managing household expenses is difficult. Despite this, I somehow managed to support her studies at a local college. Now she has been admitted to medical college. The admission process alone cost Tk 13,000, which I had to borrow."

He added that classes have already started, and Mahmuda now needs books worth about Tk 20,000 and a skeleton model for medical studies, which costs around Tk 40,000. Arranging such an amount has become nearly impossible.

In addition, Mahmuda will require another Tk 12,000 to Tk 15,000 every month for notebooks, stationery, and hostel meal expenses.

Her mother, Sayera Bibi, said tearfully, "We have no property that we can sell to cover Mahmuda's educational expenses. We live in a small mud-and-fence house built on only two decimals of land. Financial hardship is a constant part of our lives."

She said that Mahmuda has been religious since childhood and regularly performs her five-time daily prayers. "She prays to Allah to help her become a doctor so that she can provide free medical treatment to poor and underprivileged people in rural areas."

Sayera Bibi added, "My poor daughter has gained admission to medical college. I earnestly request the current government and the wealthy people of the country to stand beside her and help fulfil her dream of becoming a doctor."

Mahmuda Khatun said that first-year classes have already begun, and she moved into the hostel of Jamalpur Medical College about a week ago.

"Studying has become difficult because I do not yet have my own books. The college authorities have also instructed me to purchase a skeleton model, but my father has not been able to buy it due to financial constraints."

Neighbor Helal Uddin, who works at Mundumala Municipality, said that Mahmuda grew up amid constant financial hardship.

"Many times she had to borrow books from others to continue her studies. Her father sells tea in the village both in the morning and evening, and sometimes works as a day laborer."

He added that despite the presence of many wealthy families in the village, Mahmuda had not received sufficient support even after securing admission to medical college. "Everyone should come forward to support her."

Tanore Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Naima Khan said that she was not previously aware of Mahmuda's admission to medical college.

"Her admission to medical college from such a disadvantaged family is not only a matter of pride for her family but for the entire Tanore Upazila," she said.

The UNO added that if the necessary documents are submitted, she will discuss the matter with the Deputy Commissioner to arrange some financial assistance.
"However, government support alone is not enough. Wealthy members of society should also come forward to support such an exceptionally talented and determined student."
