DHAKA, June 10, 2026 (BSS)– In a move aimed at ensuring environmental balance alongside sustainable infrastructure development, the Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) has undertaken a large-scale tree plantation initiative within the Payra Bridge construction project area.

A special meeting on the initiative was held today at the project site office, chaired by the Project Director.

The meeting was attended by officials of the Patuakhali Forest Department, senior officials of the Bangladesh Bridge Authority, deputy project directors and representatives of the concerned contracting firm.

The initiative forms part of the government’s nationwide programme to plant 25 crore trees within five years.

The meeting decided that fruit-bearing, timber and medicinal saplings will be planted across vacant lands within the project area as well as along both sides of the approach roads of the Payra Bridge.

Participants emphasized the selection of appropriate tree species suited to the local soil conditions and environmental context to ensure higher survival rates and ecological sustainability.

It was further agreed that the Forest Department and the Bangladesh Bridge Authority will work jointly to ensure proper maintenance, monitoring, and long-term protection of the saplings after plantation.

Discussions also focused on transforming the project site into a green and eco-friendly zone, integrating environmental considerations into ongoing infrastructure development.

In a statement, the Secretary of the Bridges Division and Executive Director of the Bangladesh Bridge Authority said the authority places equal importance on environmental protection and infrastructure development.

He noted that tree plantation around major infrastructure projects like the Payra Bridge would not only enhance greenery but also contribute significantly to mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.

He described the government’s “25 crore Trees in 5 Years” programme as a timely and visionary initiative.

He also instructed all concerned to ensure proper care and maintenance of each sapling.

Following the meeting, the Project Director along with site officials and representatives of the Forest Department visited the proposed plantation areas and identified suitable locations for implementation.

Officials expressed optimism that the initiative would transform the Payra Bridge project area into a greener, more sustainable, and environmentally balanced zone.
