Int'l Day of UN Peacekeepers to be observed tomorrow

DHAKA, June 9, 2026 (BSS) - The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers will be observed across the country tomorrow with due respect and solemnity, honouring the sacrifices and contributions of peacekeepers serving around the world.

A series of programmes has been taken up to mark the day, including tributes to peacekeepers who lost their lives or were injured while serving in UN missions.

Special supplements highlighting the significance of the day will be published in national newspapers, while government and private television channels and Bangladesh Betar will air special discussion programmes.

The information was disclosed in a press release issued by Police Headquarters today.

According to the release, Bangladesh Police has been a proud partner in UN peacekeeping operations since its first deployment to the mission in Namibia in 1989.

Since then, a total of 21,828 Bangladeshi police peacekeepers, including 1,928 women officers, have served with distinction in 27 peacekeeping missions across 25 countries, contributing significantly to global peace and stability.

During peacekeeping missions, 25 members of Bangladesh Police have made the ultimate sacrifice, while 15 others were injured in the line of duty.

The release noted that Bangladeshi police peacekeepers have earned international recognition for their professionalism and humanitarian services in conflict-affected and disaster-stricken regions worldwide.

Although the International Day of UN Peacekeepers is observed globally on May 29 each year, this year's observance in Bangladesh has been rescheduled to June 10 due to a public holiday.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today issued a message on the occasion of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.

The premier called for upholding the values of peace, humanity and work together to build a better and safer world.

"We believe that a safe and peaceful world can be built through mutual respect, cooperation and tolerance," he said.

The premier said Bangladesh will take initiatives and participate actively in United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operations to promote global peace in the future.

He said the UN peacekeeping mission is a unique initiative in ensuring global peace, stability and human security.

Tarique Rahman hoped peacekeepers continue to work with great courage, patience and dedication to restore peace in regions affected by conflict, violence and humanitarian crisis.
