DHAKA, June 7, 2026 (BSS) - The government has issued a gazette notification declaring Chandraganj a new upazila, with several unions carved out of Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila.
The government has taken the decision as part of its efforts to decentralise administration and bring public services closer to the people, according to a government order issued recently.
According to the gazette issued by the Local Government Division, the administrative structure of the new upazila has been formed with a total of nine unions currently under Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila, based on the approval of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation (NICAR).
The unions included in the new Chandraganj Upazila are Bashikpur, Dattapara, Uttar Joypur, Chandraganj, Hajirpara, Charshahi, Dighali, Mandari and Kushakhali.
It is expected that the establishment of the new upazila will enable people in the area to access education, healthcare, agricultural extension, land management and other government services more easily and efficiently.
The order said the boundary demarcation of the new upazila, development of its administrative structure, appointment of officials and employees, and other related activities would be completed gradually in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations.
Necessary measures will also be taken in due course to establish essential government institutions, including the Upazila Parishad, the office of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer, a police station and a health complex.
Officials of the Local Government Division said the formation of the new upazila would facilitate the implementation of local development plans and reduce both time and costs for people seeking government services.
At the same time, administrative activities are expected to gain momentum, while local economic activities are likely to expand.
The new upazila will begin full-scale operations after the completion of the necessary administrative procedures.
