DHAKA, June 06, 2026 (BSS) - Special Metropolitan Magistrates of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) disposed of a total of 5,209 criminal cases and 337 traffic cases through summary trials in May last.

According to DMP officials, a total of 9,923 individuals were arrested during the period, of whom 5,953 were sentenced to various terms of punishment through the summary court proceedings.

Law Officer (District and Sessions Judge) Mohammad Ataul Haque stated that Motijheel, Tejgaon,  Wari, Gulshan, Mirpur, Ramna, Lalbagh and Uttara Division imposed fines of Tk 22,65,400 and confiscated Tk 78, 282. 

Special magistrates and DMP police jointly conducted 39 special operations in the metropolitan areas to control law and order in May.

Besides, the DMP’s Motijheel, Tejgaon, Wari, Gulshan, Mirpur, Ramna, Lalbagh and Uttara traffic divisions filed 1,300 cases in May under the Road Transport Act, 2018 for violating traffic law. 

A total of 337 traffic cases were disposed of, with fines amounting to Tk 6,64,500 and one accused has been sentenced to prison.

Officials noted that summary trials in the Special Metropolitan Magistrate courts are conducted under the Code of Criminal Procedure for minor offenses that warrant lighter punishments.

They said the swift disposal of cases by magistrates is expediting judicial process, strengthening public confidence in law and containing criminal activities in the city.
