RAJSHAHI, June 4, 2026 (BSS) - As scorching summer heat engulfs northwestern Bangladesh and dry winds sweep across the Barind region, Rajshahi city has transformed into a vibrant canvas of blooming flowers, offering residents and visitors a refreshing escape from the harsh weather.

Rows of flowering trees in brilliant shades of red, yellow, purple, white and pink have turned roadsides, medians and residential streets into picturesque avenues, creating a striking contrast to the city's intense summer climate.

The fiery red Krishnachura spreads its dazzling canopy over major roads, while the golden clusters of Sonalu sway gently in the breeze like natural chandeliers. Purple Jarul adds elegance to street corners and residential areas, and the orange-red blossoms of Radhachura further enrich the city's colourful landscape.

Snow-white Kathgolap blooming on road medians adds a touch of serenity amid the bustle of urban life. Together, these flowering trees provide shade and visual relief to pedestrians, cyclists, rickshaw pullers and commuters navigating the city during the sweltering season.

One of the most captivating stretches is the four-lane road from Firozabad to Chodda Pai, particularly in the Chhoto Bongram area, where rows of Sonalu, Jarul and Krishnachura have created a spectacular floral corridor.

The golden blossoms of Sonalu hang gracefully along the roadside, while the flame-red Krishnachura commands attention from afar. Between them, the soft purple hues of Jarul add a magical touch, creating a unique blend of colours that has become a major attraction for residents and visitors alike.

The city's roads and medians are also adorned with a variety of flowering plants and ornamental species, including Bougainvillea, Allamanda, Canna, Dolonchapa, Gardenia, Champa, Hasnahena, Rangan, Togor, Mussaenda, Shiuli, Jacaranda, Marigold, Rose and Beli.

From Heritage Chattar to Nagar Bhaban, and from Lakshmipur to Ghoramara Chattar and C&B intersection, flowering trees and plants have added remarkable beauty to the urban landscape.

The transformation is the result of an extensive greening initiative undertaken by Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC), under which thousands of flowering and ornamental trees were planted along roads and medians across the city.

According to RCC officials, around 10,000 trees have been planted along footpaths and roadsides, with different species selected for different stretches of roads. Decorative lighting has also been installed, enhancing the beauty of the floral avenues after sunset.

As the trees are now in full bloom, many of these locations have emerged as popular destinations for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts, particularly during the afternoon hours.

Battery-powered auto-rickshaw driver Jubayer Hossain said the roadside greenery provides both comfort and mental relaxation.

"I drive throughout the day. Whenever I feel tired, I rest under the trees. Seeing the flowers brightens my mood and gives me peace," he said.

Rajshahi University student Noman Imtiaz said the flowering trees have brought new life to the city during the harsh summer months.

"When temperatures become unbearable and everything appears dry, these colourful flowers make the city feel vibrant and alive," he added.

School teacher Shafiqul Islam said Rajshahi's roadside greening programme has created a rare harmony between urban development and nature.

"In many cities there is only concrete, smoke and dust. Rajshahi stands out because flowers continue to bloom even during the hottest days of the year," he observed.

Environmentalists say the flowering trees are not only enhancing the city's beauty but also helping mitigate the impacts of climate change and environmental stress.

They noted that the trees absorb heat, reduce dust pollution, improve air quality and provide much-needed shade in one of the country's most climate-vulnerable regions.

Environmental activist Shahidul Islam said Rajshahi still retains significant roadside greenery compared to many other cities in the country.

"These trees are far more than ornamental. They play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance, reducing urban heat, supplying oxygen and providing psychological relief to city dwellers," he said.

With thousands of flowers in full bloom across its roads and neighbourhoods, Rajshahi is once again living up to its reputation as one of Bangladesh's greenest and most beautiful cities.
