KHULNA, May 30, 2026 (BSS) - Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju today said Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman remains an enduring symbol of confidence and trust for the people of Bangladesh.
Praying for the eternal peace of the departed leader, Manju said Ziaur Rahman established a political legacy that will continue to inspire welfare-oriented politics for generations to come.
He made these observations as the chief guest at a discussion and prayer session held on the ground floor of the City Corporation building, marking the 45th martyrdom anniversary of the former president.
Organized by KCC officers and employees, the program featured former KCC Mayor and freedom fighter Mohammad Moniruzzaman as a special guest, who spoke extensively on the life and contributions of Ziaur Rahman. Principal Mazharul Hannan delivered the keynote address, while Professor Abdul Mannan spoke as a special discussant.
"Ziaur Rahman demonstrated throughout his life how politics can be practiced for the welfare of the people and how a prosperous state can be built through honesty, dedication and patriotism," Manju said, urging everyone to uphold those ideals in public life.
Recalling Ziaur Rahman's visits to Khulna, the KCC administrator noted that the former president consistently encouraged talented individuals to participate in politics.
He added that former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman are continuing efforts to build a modern, welfare-focused Bangladesh and called for united public support toward the country's progress.
Manju also commended the Prime Minister's Eid gifts for sanitation workers, noting that the initiative significantly motivated them to perform effectively during post-Eid-ul-Azha waste management operations.
Other speakers highlighted that after assuming the presidency in April 1977, Ziaur Rahman introduced multi-party democracy, undertook landmark economic reforms, promoted agricultural development and pursued an independent foreign policy that accelerated national progress.
Chaired by KCC Secretary Md Reza Rashid, the meeting was also addressed by Khulna Press Club General Secretary Md Tarikul Islam, KCC Employees' Union President Ujjwal Kumar Saha and Employees' Union President Abdul Haque, among others.
KCC Administrative Officer Molla Maruf Rashid conducted the program, while KCC Teachers' Association President Maulana Nasir Uddin Kashemi led the special prayers.
