CHATTOGRAM, May 28, 2026 (BSS) - The fire that erupted today in the engine room of the commercial oil tanker MT Meghna Traders, currently docked at the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port, has been successfully brought under control nearly four hours of frantic efforts.
The Chattogram Port Authority said that the fire was extinguished at approximately 11:30 am on Thursday .
Earlier, a blaze ignited in the engine room of the vessel anchored at Charlie Point, the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port near Parky Beach, around 7:30 am today.
Following the incident, the crews were promptly evacuated from the engine room, and carbon dioxide was sprayed on the ship to suppress the flames.
Upon receiving the alert, Chattogram Port tugboats Kandari-3 and Kandari-11, along with the Bangladesh Navy tug BNT Sevak and the Bangladesh Coast Guard tugboat Pramatta, arrived at the scene and commenced fire fighting operations. The Bangladesh Coast Guard indicated that Coast Guard ship Shyamal Bangla and several fire fighting and rescue teams also took part in the operation.
A total of 22 crew members were safely rescued, and there have been no reports of any casualties.
Md. Nasir Uddin, Chief Personnel Officer of Chattogram Port, stated that the vessel arrived at the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port on May 26, carrying RBD soybeans from Indonesia. The fire that broke out on Thursday morning was brought under control by 11:30 am. The port authority, Coast Guard, Navy, and the ship's local agent, USL, are collaboratively monitoring the overall situation of the vessel.
