PATUAKHALI, April 15, 2026 (BSS) - A dead mother olive ridley sea turtle, weighing about 40 kilograms, was found washed ashore on Kuakata sea beach early Wednesday morning, raising concerns among environmentalists and local residents.

The turtle was discovered around 6:00 am near the sunrise point area Kawarchar Jhauban. Jalil, a member of the Coastal Environment Protection Movement, first spotted the dead turtle and promptly alerted members of the Dolphin Protection Committee.

Such incidents signal potential threats to marine biodiversity in the region. Experts suspect that water pollution, illegal fishing nets, and the growing impacts of climate change may be contributing factors behind such death.

Abul Hossain Raju, joint convener of the Coastal Environment Protection Movement (UPRA), expressed concerned over the repeated deaths of marine animals along the coast. He emphasized the urgent need for coordinated and effective measures to protect the fragile coastal ecosystem.

Mahipur Range Officer Moniruzzaman from the Forest Department said that the matter is being taken seriously. An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of death, and authorities plan to strengthen monitoring and surveillance efforts to prevent similar incidents.

Environmentalists stressed that alongside government action, raising public awareness is crucial for safeguarding marine wildlife and preserving biodiversity.

Later, members of the Dolphin Protection Committee, the Forest Department, and local voluntary organizations jointly buried the dead turtle.
