Nine candidates file nominations for Bogura-6 by-poll, Sherpur-3 polls

DHAKA, March 3, 2026 (BSS) - A total of nine candidates have submitted nomination papers for the general election in Sherpur-3 constituency and the by-election in the vacant Bogura-6 constituency.

According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission (EC), voting in the two constituencies will be held on April 9 (Thursday) from 7:30am to 4:30pm without any break.

EC sources said six candidates have submitted nomination papers for the general election in the Sherpur-3 parliamentary constituency.

From the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Md. Mahmudul Haque Rubel has filed his nomination. Md. Masudur Rahman has submitted nomination papers with Jamaat-e-Islami ticket.

In addition, one candidate each from Islami Andolon Bangladesh and Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist), as well as one independent candidate, has submitted nomination papers.

The election in Sherpur-3 has been scheduled following the death of Mohammad Nuruzzaman, the validly nominated candidate of Jamaat-e-Islami in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election held on February 12. 

According to the EC, three candidates have submitted nomination papers for the election in the vacant Bogura-6 parliamentary constituency.

From the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Md. Rezaul Karim Badsha has filed his nomination while Md. Abidur Rahman has submitted nomination papers from Jamaat-e-Islami. A candidate from the Bangladesh Development Party has also filed nomination papers.

As per the schedule, the last date for submission of nomination papers was March 2. Scrutiny of nomination papers by the returning officer will take place on March 5.

Appeals against the returning officer's decision may be filed from March 6 to 10, with disposal of appeals set for March 11. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 14, and election symbols will be allocated on March 15.

On February 24, the EC issued separate gazette notifications announcing the general election in Sherpur-3 and the by-election in the vacant Bogura-6 constituency.

After winning from Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 seats, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, now the Prime Minister, gave up Bogura-6.
