UNDP delegation meets NHRC chairperson, commissioners

DHAKA, March 03, 2026 (BSS) – A delegation of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), led by its Resident Representative Stephen Liller, paid a courtesy visit to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today.

The delegation met with NHRC Chairperson Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and the commissioners at the NHRC office, according to a press release.

During the meeting, both sides emphasized mutual cooperation to advocate for converting the National Human Rights Commission Ordinance into law. Constructive discussions were also held on Bangladesh’s human rights situation and ensuring accountability. Both parties stressed the importance of collaboration in strengthening human rights protection and the rule of law.

The discussions highlighted NHRC’s broad mandate under the ordinance, structural limitations in implementing this mandate, and existing challenges in conducting investigations and inquiries. The need to enhance institutional capacity to ensure the commission’s effective functioning was also underlined. The Chairperson and commissioners briefed the delegation on the commission’s current goals and objectives in safeguarding human rights.

Both sides expressed their commitment to continuing dialogue on human rights, increasing information exchange, and further expanding future cooperation.
