Probe body formed over alleged rape of JU student, accused's certificates suspended

JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Feb 28, 2026 (BSS) - The Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have formed a six-member investigation committee to probe allegations of rape and mental and physical tortures lodged by a female student of the university's Public Administration department.

Besides, the authorities have temporarily suspended the academic certificates of the accused, a student of the Institute of Information Technology (IIT), according to a press release signed tonight by university's Public Relations Office Acting Director Mohammad Mahiuddin.

The probe body was asked to submit a report with recommendations, said the press release.

According to the complaint filed with the university's Proctor office, the accused forcibly took the victim from Bir Protik Taramon Bibi Hall to his rented residence in nearby Islamnagar on February 24 at around 6:10 pm. She accused him of tying her hands, legs and mouth and subjecting her to severe physical and mental torture, including rape, the release said.

The probe committee has been formed with Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences Prof Dr Mohammad Mafruhi Sattar as its president. 

Other members include Prof Dr Md Sohel Rana of the Pharmacy department, Prof Dr Khandakar Mohammad Shariful Huda of the Geography and Environment department, Prof Dr Mirza Taslima Sultana of the Anthropology department, Prof Dr Nasrin Sultana of the Government and Politics department and Deputy Registrar (Higher Education and Scholarship) Lutfur Rahman Arif as member secretary.

The decision was taken at an emergency administrative meeting held this afternoon with Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan in the chair.
