KHULNA, Feb 22, 2026 (BSS)- State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam has said the government will take stringent measures against piracy in the Sundarbans.
A coordinated drive will begin soon to free the mangrove forest from pirates,” he said adding the cabinet will soon take decision in this regard.
Faridul Islam said this while exchanging views with stakeholders on the ‘Measures to Prevent Water Piracy in the Sundarbans’ at Khulna Circuit House Conference hall here today.
Expressing deep concern over recent rise in unlawful activities of the forest-based criminals, Faridul Islam said law enforcement agencies were asked to take stringent steps for effective implementation of anti-piracy measures.
“The government is determined to restore a sound and peaceful environment in the Sundarbans. Necessary steps will be taken so that forest-dependent people can work safely,” he said.
Khulna Divisional Commissioner Mokhtar Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner ASM Jamshed Khondokar, officials of the Forest Department, Coast Guard, RAB, Navy, BGB and representatives of the tourism sector were present.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, the state minister said pirates have taken advantage of the void of authoritative action during the interim government. But, the present government is firmly committed to curb piracy from Sundarbans.
The government is giving special emphasis on the blue economy and eco-tourism, he said, adding that ensuring security in the Sundarbans and adjacent waterways is essential to keep the regional economy functional.
Replying to a question, he noted that the forest had become largely piracy-free between 2016 and 2018 following the surrender of criminal groups, but recently they have resurfaced again, making the fishermen reluctant to go to forest for their livelihood.
“If the situation persists, eco-tourism and the blue economy will face setback, and government revenue will also be at risk,” he noted.
