DHAKA, Feb 19, 2026 (BSS) – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman today called upon the countrymen to observe the ‘International Mother Language Day and Martyrs’ Day’ (Shaheed Dibash) with due respect and solemnity.

In a statement issued today, he said February 21 is the nation’s glorious International Mother Language Day and Martyrs’ Day. In 1952, the student community of the then East Pakistan launched a historic movement demanding Bangla as a state language, defying the ruling authorities of the time.

Jamaat Ameer said law enforcement agencies opened fire indiscriminately on peaceful demonstrators to suppress the movement, leading to the martyrdom of many, including Dhaka University students.

“The nation will forever remember with profound respect their supreme sacrifice in establishing the dignity of the Bangla language. I pray to Almighty Allah for the eternal peace of their departed souls,” he added.

Shafiqur Rahman noted that February 21 is now recognized globally as International Mother Language Day, which symbolizes international respect and recognition for the language martyrs.

He stressed that Bangla must be ensured its rightful place at all levels of state and social life. Efforts should be intensified to expand and protect the country’s language and cultural heritage, he said, adding that only then would the dreams of the language movement martyrs be realized.

The Jamaat Ameer said the nation is set to observe the day at a time when a new government has been formed under the leadership of BNP. However, he alleged that associates of the “fallen fascism” are still trying to destabilize the country. He urged the people to remain united to resist any conspiracy against the nation.

He expressed hope that the government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would ensure democracy, rule of law, human rights, voting rights and freedom of expression in the country.

Jamaat Ameer also emphasized that it is the responsibility of the government to create an environment where people can move freely with security of life, property and dignity.

On the occasion of February 21, he called upon all chapters of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the countrymen to observe the day with due solemnity through discussion meetings and prayers.
