TANGAIL, Feb 15, 2026 (BSS) - Deposits of 27 out of 47 candidates contesting 
in eight parliamentary constituencies of the district have been forfeited for 
failing to secure the minimum required votes in the latest concluding 
national polls.

Under the rules of the Election Commission of Bangladesh, a candidate must 
obtain at least one-eighth of the total casting votes in a constituency. 
Otherwise, the security deposit of Taka 50,000 submitted during nomination 
filing is forfeited and deposited into the government treasury.

According to results announced by the District Returning Officer, the highest 
number of forfeitures occurred in Tangail-5 (Sadar), where seven candidates 
lost their deposits.

In Tangail-1 (Madhupur-Dhanbari), four candidates -- Jatiya Party's Muhammad 
Ilias Hossain, Islami Andolan Bangladesh's Harun Or Rashid, and independent 
candidates Mohammad Ali and Asadul Islam-- forfeited their deposits. 

In Tangail-2 (Bhuapur-Gopalpur), two candidates-- Islami Andolan Bangladesh's 
Monowar Hossain Sagar and Jatiya Party's Humayun Kabir Talukder-- failed to 
secure the required votes.

In Tangail-3 (Ghatail), independent candidate Ainin Nahar and Islami Andolan 
Bangladesh's Rezaul Karim lost their deposits.

In Tangail-4 (Kalihati), three candidates-- Jatiya Party's Liaqat Ali, 
independent candidate Abdul Halim Mia, and Islami Andolan Bangladesh's Ali 
Amjad Hossain-- forfeited their deposits.

In Tangail-5 (Sadar), seven candidates lost their deposits, including 
Bangladesh Congress' AKM Shafiqul Islam, Islami Andolan Bangladesh's 
Khandaker Zakir Hossain, Gana Sanghati Andolan's Fatema Akhter, Jatiya 
Party's Mozammel Haque, Gono Odhikar Parishad's Md. Shafiqul Islam, 
Bangladesh Supreme Party's Md. Hasrat Khan Bhasani, and Jatiya Samajtantrik 
Dal's Syed Khalequzzaman Mostafa.

In Tangail-6 (Nagarpur-Delduar), five candidates-- Jatiya Party's Tarek Shams 
and Mohammad Mamunur Rahim, Islami Andolan Bangladesh's Md. Akhinur Mia, and 
independent candidates Md. Jewel Sarkar and Muhammad Ashraful Islam-- 
forfeited their deposits.

In Tangail-7 (Mirzapur), Bangladesh Republican Party's Tofazzal Hossain 
failed to secure the minimum votes required.

In Tangail-8 (Basail-Sakhipur), three candidates-- Bangladesh Revolutionary 
Workers Party's Awar Mahmud, Aam Janata Dal's Alamgir Hossain, and Jatiya 
Party's Nazmul Hasan-- lost their deposits.

District Senior Election Officer Taijul Islam Jalan said that candidates who 
do not obtain one-eighth of the total votes automatically forfeit their 
deposits, which are subsequently transferred to the state treasury in 
accordance with election regulations.
