DHAKA, Feb 7, 2026 (BSS) - BNP standing committee member Dr. Khondaker Mosharraf Hossain today said that with the passing of former three-time Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, the nation has lost a guardian and the people of Bangladesh are deeply feeling her absence.
He made the remarks after paying tribute and offering prayers at the graves of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia at Zia Uddan in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
Dr. Mosharraf described Khaleda Zia as a symbol of uncompromising and patriotic leadership. He recalled that at one stage she had been advised to leave the country, but she firmly rejected the suggestion, declaring that Bangladesh was her homeland and that she would never abandon its people.
"She was determined to always stand beside the people of this country," he said.
Dr. Mosharraf said Begum Khaleda Zia's contributions to Bangladesh were immeasurable, noting that her love for the people, role in national development and lifelong service continue to be remembered with deep respect.
He also said that the people of the country fondly remember BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, the eldest son of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia.
Referring to the period following the assassination of President Ziaur Rahman, Dr. Mosharraf said many believed the BNP would not survive without its founder. "But Begum Khaleda Zia, through her capable and resolute leadership, kept the party united and well-organized," he said.
Under her leadership, he added, the BNP came to power three times and worked for the welfare and service of the people.
