DHAKA, Feb 3, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) has formed a two member investigation committee into allegations of irregularities and irresponsibility in Chairman Ghat-Hatiya ferry service in Noakhali.
Earlier, Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hossain has directed the BIWTC to form a probe body to this end. As per his directives, the BIWTC formed the two member committee, a handout said.
The committee has been instructed to complete the investigation within the next three working days.
The BIWTC authorities said strict action will be taken against any irregularities to ensure smooth operation of the new service.
Ferry 'Mahananda', which was operated on February 2, departed from Chairman Ghat for Hatiya at 8:20 am and reached Hatiya after 10:00 am. It was alleged that after reaching Hatiya, the engine master of the ferry left the ghat without disembarking the passengers and loading the ferry.
Later, the ferry arrived at the ghat at 11:45 pm and left the ferry at 12:20 am. In this incident, allegations of mismanagement in ferry operation, time management and passenger and vehicle transportation were raised. The matter came to the notice of the shipping adviser when a video clip was circulated on social media.
