BOGURA, Jan 30, 2026 (BSS) – Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman became visibly emotional as he returned to his electoral constituency after 19 years, saying he struggled to find words upon coming back home.
“I don’t know what to say after returning to my own home—I have lost track of my words. I have become emotional. There is nothing left to say to my own people,” he said.
Tarique Rahman made the remarks while addressing a massive election rally as the chief guest at the historic Altafunnessa Playground in the city in the early hours of today.
Recalling his time working with the people of Bogura before leaving the country 19 years ago, he said he had always tried to address public needs within the framework of government laws and policies.
Referring to the Banani–Matidali road, the establishment of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and gas connections, he said: “Bogura was my model district. I used to plan how the remaining 63 districts could be developed by taking Bogura as the reference point."
Referring to the upcoming national election, Tarique Rahman termed it highly significant for the country, saying the polls would decide whether a government accountable to the people is formed.
He urged everyone to remain serious and vigilant ahead of the polls.
On development issues, the BNP Chairman said that whether he is seen as a son of the soil or simply as a candidate, he needs the opportunity to work to fulfil the expectations of the people of Bogura.
Expressing his desire to see Bogura like it was in 2001–2006 period, Tarique Rahman said that over the last 17 years, not only Bogura but the entire country has been deprived.
Mentioning that there had been no real progress in healthcare, education, or other sectors, Tarique Rahman said that mega projects had turned into avenues for mega corruption.
“The root of corruption must be eliminated,” he added.
He pledged to ensure merit-based recruitment for jobs, saying Bogura’s legitimate demands would be met while ensuring that other districts are not deprived.
“I have nothing to give today, but I have something to ask for—I seek your prayers,” he said.
He said that with collective support, Bangladesh could be rebuilt as a beautiful and prosperous country.
Earlier, at 11:48 pm on Thursday night, Tarique Rahman set foot on Bogura soil for the first time in 19 years.
As he entered the city to attend the rally, thousands of people lined both sides of the road, greeting him with salutes and waves.
His wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, accompanied him during the visit.
They also participated in a brief prayer seeking eternal peace for the departed soul of Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
From the afternoon onward, the Altafunnessa Playground and surrounding areas were filled to capacity with party leaders and activists.
Many people waited until midnight on the rooftops of nearby high-rise buildings just to have a glimpse of Tarique Rahman.
The rally was presided over by Bogura District BNP unit President Rezaul Karim Badsha.
BNP candidates from the remaining six constituencies of Bogura and leaders from various levels of the party also addressed the gathering.
