DHAKA, Jan 27, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami today strongly condemned and protested the obstruction of electioneering activities and the attack on Dhaka-8 constituency parliamentary candidate Nasiruddin Patwary.
“Nasiruddin Patwary, Chief Coordinator of National Citizen Party (NCP) and 11-party alliance candidate for Dhaka-8, was attacked by identified terrorists of a major political party while conducting election campaign in the capital’s Shantinagar area this afternoon,” Jamaat-e-Islami said in a statement here today.
Terming the incident a “heinous terrorist attack”, Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary General and Central Publicity and Media Department Chief Advocate Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair expressed strong condemnation and protest against the assault.
Advocate Zubayer said obstructing electioneering activities is a serious offence under the Representation of the People Order (RPO), adding that such actions make it impossible to ensure a level playing field in the upcoming election slated to be held on February 12.
He said campaigning is a constitutional and democratic right of all participating political parties, and any attempt to obstruct this right poses a serious threat to democracy.
Describing the attack on Nasiruddin Patwary as highly “condemnable, undemocratic and contrary to political tolerance”, the Jamaat leader said violence in the name of political differences is unacceptable.
He urged the government and the Election Commission to immediately identify the attackers, bring them to justice with exemplary punishment, and ensure a peaceful political environment in the country.
