HC restores nomination of BNP candidate Sarwar for Chattogram-2

DHAKA, Jan 27, 2026 (BSS) - The High Court (HC) today ordered the restoration of the nomination of BNP candidate Sarwar Alamgir for the Chattogram-2 constituency.

A High Court Division bench, comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Ashif Hasan, passed the order, staying the Election Commission's (EC) decision that had cancelled Sarwar Alamgir's candidacy on allegations of loan default.

Senior advocates Ahsanul Karim and Ruhul Quddus Kazal appeared before the court on behalf of Sarwar Alamgir, while advocates Mohammad Hossain Lipu, ASM Shahriar Kabir and Azimuddin Patwari represented the opposing side.

Earlier, the EC had declared Sarwar Alamgir's nomination papers valid. However, his rival candidate from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Muhammad Nurul Amin, filed an appeal alleging that Sarwar Alamgir was a loan defaulter. After hearing the appeal, the EC cancelled his candidacy.

Challenging the legality of the EC decision, Sarwar Alamgir later filed a writ petition with the High Court, which led to today's order.
