ICT to deliver judgment in Chankharpul crimes against humanity case today
 
DHAKA, Jan 20, 2026 (BSS) - The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 is scheduled to pronounce its judgment today in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of six people in the capital's Chankharpul area on August 5, 2024.
 
Prosecution sources said the judgment will be broadcast live on BTV.
 
The tribunal had fixed January 20 for the verdict on December 24, 2025, after the defence concluded its arguments. Earlier, on July 14, 2025, ICT-1 framed charges against eight accused in connection with the killings.
 
The accused are: former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Habibur Rahman, former DMP joint commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, former additional deputy commissioner Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam, former assistant commissioner of DMP's Ramna zone Mohammad Imrul, former inspector Md Arshad Hossain, constables Md Sujon, Imaj Hossain Emon, and Nasirul Islam.
 
The first four accused are yet to be arrested and are being tried in absentia.
 
The prosecution filed the formal charge against all eight accused on May 25, marking the first formal charge filed at the ICT in cases arising from the July-August mass uprising.
 
The six victims-Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Mahdi Hasan Zunayed, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Hawlader, Md Ismamul Haque, and Manik Miah-were killed in Chankharpul on August 5, 2024.
 
The tribunal's investigation agency submitted a 90-page probe report on April 20, 2025.
