DHAKA, Jan 15, 2026 (BSS) - Jayashree Kabir, a popular actress of Bengali cinema, passed away on Monday in London at the age of 72.
Jabed Mahmud, niece of noted filmmaker Alamgir Kabir, confirmed her death here today.
Jayashree Kabir was crowned Miss Calcutta in 1968. She entered the film industry in the 1970s, making her debut in a film directed by Satyajit Ray based on a story by Sunil Gangopadhyay.
She won widespread acclaim and popularity with her performance in 'Surja Kanya' directed by Alamgir Kabir, and went on to act in four films under his direction.
Her notable films include Protidondhi (1970) in Calcutta, Surja Kanya (1975) in Dhaka, Asadharan (1976) in Calcutta, Simana Periye (1977) in Dhaka, Rupali Saikat (1979), Dena Pawna (1981), Mohona (1982), Nalish (1982), Puruskar (1983), and Sahar Theke Dure (1984).
Jayashree Kabir had been living in London for many years, where she also served as an English teacher at a university.
