DHAKA, Nov 24, 2025 (BSS) - The National Lawyers Alliance (NLA), the lawyers’ wing of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has demanded the abolition of the current ad hoc committee of the Bangladesh Bar Council, calling it opaque and ineffective.
The organization also demanded immediate elections of the Bar Council.
At the same time, the NLA called for the abolition of ad-hoc committees of all bar associations across the country, including the Supreme Court Bar Association, and the Dhaka and Chattogram bars.
At a press briefing held at the Supreme Court premises, NLA’s Central Member Secretary Ershadul Bari Khandakar placed the demand on behalf of the organization.
Central Convener SM Azmal Hossain Bacchu, Joint Conveners Mustafa Azgar Sharifi, Joint Member Secretaries Advocate Nazmus Sakib, Sefayet Ullah, Bishwanath Karmakar, Mary Akter and Chief Organizer Sakil Ahmad, were present, among others.
It was stated in the press conference that the provisions for an ad hoc committee are not included in the Bar Council’s order or rules.
The NLA said the ad hoc committee has jeopardized the futures of these individuals, showing its irresponsibility, incompetence, and lack of transparency by cancelling the result of 1,914 candidates who passed through review applications.
It said the committee has no moral right to hold a position in an institution like the Bar Council.
