Jubo League leader Hanif held for attacking CU students

CHATTOGRAM, Nov 16, 2025 (BSS) - Police today arrested Mohammad Hanif, a Jubo League leader wanted in multiple cases over attacks on Chattogram University (CU) students.

Hathazari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Manjur Quader Bhuiyan led the operation and detained Hanif from his residence in Hathazari on this afternoon.

Police said Hanif had long been involved in various local misdeeds while using the identity of a Jubo League leader. He is an accused in two cases filed over assaults on CU students.

According to local sources, Hanif established dominance in Fatepur Union after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5. His younger brother Iqbal, joint general secretary of the Chattogram North District Chhatra League, was known to be his close associate.

Both brothers face more than 10 cases in different police stations, including Hathazari.

On October 21, 2024, supporters of Hanif reportedly attacked students in the Chattogram University Station area during a dispute over a shop. Five students were injured in that incident.

Later, on the night of August 31 this year, over 400 students including Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Kamal Uddin and former Proctor Professor Dr Tanvir Haider Arif were injured in a violent clash with locals near Gate No. 2 of the university.

The CU administration filed a separate case over the August 31 incident, naming Hanif as an accused. He had been on the run since then and was arrested nearly two months after the clash.
