DHAKA, Nov 14, 2025 (BSS) - A youth died after jumping into the Turag River while fleeing from a public chase during an attempt to set fire to a bus in the capital, police said. Another individual has been arrested in connection with the incident.
According to Shah Ali Police Station, on Thursday night, several youths poured kerosene from a plastic bottle and set fire to a bus parked near the west side of Sohel Engineering Workshop at Uttar Nawaberbagh. They were reportedly recording the act on a mobile phone.
Noticing the incident, local residents chased the miscreants and caught one on the spot. Another youth, in fear, jumped into the nearby Turag River, while a third managed to escape.
The youth who jumped into the river, identified as Saiyaf, 18, drowned as he did not know how to swim. Locals rescued him in critical condition and took him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors on duty declared him dead.
The arrested youth has been identified as Rudra Mohammad Nahian Amir Sani, 18, according to a press release issued by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Media and Public Relations Division today.
Police said efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining fugitive involved in the bus arson attempt, and legal action against the arrested youth is underway.
