DHAKA, Oct 30, 2025 (BSS)- BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said that his party still has full confidence in the interim government regarding holding next national election.

"Despite having objections to the proposals and recommendations of the National Consensus Commission, BNP still has full confidence in the interim government regarding the national election. BNP believes the national election will be held in the first half of February as announced by the Chief Adviser. There is no ambiguity in this regard," he said.

Fakhrul made the remarks in a written statement at a press conference of the BNP Standing Committee at the BNP Chairperson's Gulshan office.

BNP held the press conference to announce decisions following the two-day Standing Committee meeting on October 28-29.

Fakhrul Islam said, the National Consensus Commission presented the government with a proposal titled 'July National Charter (Constitutional Reform) Implementation Order 2025.'

The interim government is set to issue an order titled 'July National Charter (Constitutional Reform) Implementation Order-2025' to implement the constitutional amendments included in the July National Charter.

BNP believes the government lacks the jurisdiction to issue such an order, asserting that any order must be signed by the President of the Consensus Commission Prof Dr  Muhammad Yunus.

Fakhrul said, "Any bill becomes law only after approval by the National Parliament and subsequent assent by the President.

There is no scope for automatic inclusion into the Constitution. If this happens, it will be contrary to democratic practices and parliamentary sovereignty."

"We cannot agree to the other recommendations of the National Consensus Commission as they are unacceptable because they fail to mention the matters on which consensus was reached, including those with 'note of dissent,' and they include issues that were not discussed during the long deliberations," he added.

Mirza Fakhrul also alleged that the proposals and recommendations of the National Consensus Commission are being imposed on the nation unilaterally and forcibly.

He claimed that some clauses on which all parties had agreed were changed without knowledge.

He said that the recommendations provided by the National Consensus Commission for implementing the July Charter are absolutely unacceptable.

"The attempt to impose the Consensus Commission's proposals and recommendations on the nation in a one-sided and forceful manner proves that the dialogue with political parties was meaningless, a farce, and a deception to the nation."

The BNP Secretary General noted, "It was understood that the next elected National Parliament would implement the July Charter and provide its legal basis. However, the recommendations introduce a term called the 'July Charter Implementation Council.' This is unwelcome and deliberate."

Mirza Fakhrul highlighted the clause stating that if the reform is not completed within 270 calendar days from the date the first session begins, the Constitution Reform Bill approved by a referendum will be automatically incorporated into the Constitution.

He called this "completely illogical, ridiculous, and deliberate," and also "contrary to democratic values."

"These recommendations will only divide the nation, creating disunity instead of unity. Accepting any self-serving reform proposal could lead to long-term harm in national life," Fakhrul added.

Regarding the referendum, he emphasized that the referendum must be held simultaneously with the national parliamentary election. He said there is no scope to hold a referendum before that, calling it "illogical and injudicious" given the considerations of time, money, and the immense preparations required for an election.

Mirza Fakhrul mentioned that the BNP has brought about groundbreaking reforms and development in all matters, including the re-establishment of democracy, the system of state governance, and the growth of the national economy for the well-being of the country and its people.

"We sincerely wish for the success of the ongoing reform process, but as a responsible political party, we are obliged to take and state our position to ensure the true welfare of the country and its people," he concluded.

BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed, Nazrul Islam Khan, Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and Selima Rahman also spoke at the press conference.
