DHAKA, Oct 27, 2025 (BSS) - A workshop on ‘Development of Evidence-Based Protocols for Gynecological Cancer Management’ was held at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) here today.
The workshop was organized with a joint initiative between BMU and the Harvard Medical School of the United States of America (USA).
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Admin) of the BMU Prof Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad joined the workshop as chief guest while university Treasurer Prof Dr Nahreen Akhter and country’s renowned gynecologist Prof Dr Sabera Khatun joined the event as special guest.
Chaired by Chairperson of the Gynecological Oncology Department Prof Dr Jannatul Ferdous, the workshop was addressed, among others, by Vice-Chancellor (VC) of BMU Prof Dr Md Shahinul Alam, Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital’s Prof Dr Annekathryn Goodman, BMU Clinical Oncology Department Chairman Prof Dr Syed Md Akram Hossain and Prof Md Ahsan Habib from International Medical College.
Prof Dr. Fauzia Hossain of the Gynecological Oncology Department gave vote of thanks.
The speakers lain emphasize on evidence-based medical practices that would play a crucial role in improving the quality of care in gynecological cancer management, reducing variations in prescriptions and lowering healthcare costs.
BMU VC Prof Dr Shahinul Alam stated that evidence-based medical practice would reduce variations in prescriptions and healthcare costs. By considering research evidence, expert experience and patient rights, it would ensure proper treatment, he added.
He also announced that BMU had been recognized as an ‘Evidence Ambassador’ for 2025 by the World Evidence-Based Healthcare Day.
While addressing as chief guest Prof Dr Abul Kalam Azad said that evidence-based medicine is the cornerstone of modern medical science. Determining the best treatment for patients based on research data ensures the excellence of medical practice, he said.
Prof Dr Nahreen Akhter said that evidence-based medicine is a globally recognized and proven approach that ensures the quality of healthcare services.
Prof Dr Sabera Khatun said that such workshops should be held in every medical institution as they will open new horizons in medical education and research.
During the event, an agreement was signed between the BMU and the Harvard Medical School to advance the evidence-based medical practice and research.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between BMU's Gynecological Oncology and Clinical Oncology Departments and Harvard Medical School & Massachusetts General Hospital to advance evidence-based medicine practices.
The goal of this agreement is to enhance gynecological cancer treatment, exchange programs for doctors and specialists, training and joint research activities. This collaboration will open a new chapter in gynecological cancer care and precision of oncology in Bangladesh.
