DHAKA, Oct 26, 2025 (BSS) - The River Police conducted a 22-day "Mother Hilsa Conservation Campaign 2025" from October 4-25 to enforce the government ban on catching, transporting, or selling Hilsa during the breeding season.
"The drive aims to boost Hilsa reproduction and ensure sustainable fisheries," said a River Police press release.
Under Additional IGP Kusum Dewan's direction, officers raised public awareness, carried out river patrols, and led operations across the country.
The campaign seized over 61 crore meters of illegal nets, 62,644 kg of fish, and 1,221 boats, while 3,173 offenders were arrested.
Mobile courts filed 534 cases and issued fines and jail terms. Seized fish were distributed to the poor, and illegal nets were destroyed.
