Shibir-backed panel sweeps 24 out of 26 central posts in CUCSU election

CHATTOGRAM, Oct 16, 2025 (BSS) - Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed Sompritir Shikkharthi Jote panel has secured victory in 24 out of the 26 central posts, including vice-president and general secretary, in the Chattogram University Central Students' Union (CUCSU) election.

Chief Election Commissioner, Professor Monir Uddin, announced the results at around 5 am today (Thursday) at the university's BBA Faculty auditorium. He stated that the election was conducted peacefully and in a festive atmosphere.

In the VP race, the Shibir-backed candidate Ibrahim Hossain Rony won the vice-president (VP) post with 7,983 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) backed candidate Sazzad Hossain, who received 4,374 votes.
 
In the election for the general secretary position, Sayed Bin Habib, supported by Shibir, won with 8,031 votes, defeating Md Shafayat Hossain, backed by Chhatra Dal, who received 2,734 votes.

The assistant general secretary (AGS) race was the only exception: JCD's Ayubur Rahman Toufiq won with 7,014 votes, beating Shibir's Sajjad Hossain Munna with 5,045 votes.
 
Tamanna Mahbub Preeti from the "Binirman Shikkharthi Oikya" panel won the assistant sports secretary position with 4,829 votes, surpassing Shibir-supported candidate Shah Poran Maruf, who received 4,594 votes.

Overall control, however, rests decisively with Sampritir Shikkharthi Jote following its 24-seat haul.

Sports Secretary: Mohammad Shawon; Deputy Sports Secretary: Tamanna Mahbub Preeti (Binirman Shikkharthi Oikya). Literature, Culture & Publications Secretary: Harej Matbar; Deputy: Jihad Hossain.

Office Secretary: Abdullah Al Noman (3,258 votes), with close runner-up Tahsan Habib (3,236). Deputy Office Secretary: Jannatul Adan Nusrat.

Women Students’ Welfare Secretary: Nahima Akter Deepa; Deputy: Jannatul Ferdous Rita.

Science & ICT Secretary: Md Mahbubur Rahman. Research & Innovation Secretary: Tanvir Anjum Shovon.

Shibir last won a CUCSU election in 1981, during the fifth CUCSU polls. Jasim Uddin Sarkar became vice president and Abdul Gaffar became general secretary, both Shibir leaders at Chattogram University. Ten years later, on February 8, 1990, the sixth CUCSU election was held, and the joint panel of all student groups emerged victorious. Nazim Uddin of Jatiya Chhatra League became vice president, and Azim Uddin Ahmad of the Samajtantrik Chhatra Front became general secretary.

A total of 908 candidates participated in the CUCSU and hall union elections. Of these, 415 ran for 26 CUCSU positions and 493 for 14 hall union positions.
 
The draft voter list consisted of 27,521 enrolled student voters. The voting occurred in 689 booths at 15 centers within five faculty buildings from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm.
