DHAKA, June 29, 2025 (BSS) - Experts have laid emphasis on enhancing women's capacity through awareness of using public infrastructure with care for ensuring the sustainability of government service facilities.
They observed that the services and facilities that are implemented by government should be maintained and cared for by the residents because they are the owners and are getting benefit from these.
They made the observation at a series of meetings held recently under the Emergency Multi-Sector Rohingya Crisis Response Project (EMCRP), supported by the World Bank and implemented by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), said a press release.
The Bangladesh Center for Communication Programs (BCCP) were successfully accomplished a series of 180 uthan boithak (courtyard meeting) with women at different areas in the Rohingya Camps and the host community of Cox's Bazar.
These accomplishments mark a significant step forward for ensuring the sustainability of government service facilities.
The main objectives of these meetings are to increase awareness among Rohingya and host community women to use the government service facilities with care and inform local women about these development initiatives and their potential impact on the community.
These events also focused on the promotions of personal hygiene, safe water use, sanitation and the use of sanity toilets. A total of 3600 women attended these events held in the Rohingya Camps and host community of Cox's Bazar.
Deizy Chakroborty, Camp-in-Charge and Executive Magistrate of Rohingya Camp-20 and 20ext along with Assistant Camp-in-Charge and her officials attended a meeting at camp-20 as distinguished guests.
Her presence as a distinguished guest at the meeting added value to this event.
Deizy said, "Government has developed many service facilities for the well-being of community members. People should change their mentality to use services facilities with care. Community members should unitedly come forward to maintain all the service facilities for ensuring long term sustainability".
Rabiul Hossain, Upazila Engineer of LGED, Teknaf attended a meeting at Teknaf as distinguished guest.
He said, "LGED developed roads, culverts, bridges, disaster shelters and installed solar streetlight, but most of the people don't know what the activities of LGED? They simply think that the government has built these infrastructures, they don't know which department is responsible for implementing these. The services and facilities that are implemented by LGED should be maintained and cared for by the residents because they are the owners and are getting benefit from these. So, everyone should be aware of using the service facilities with care".
Under the guidance of Camp-in-Charge in the camp and Upazila Engineer of LGED in the host, BCCP staff conducted these events in the Rohingya camps and host community at Cox's Bazar.
Focusing on the project tagline: "Service facilities for me, I use with care" the main discussion emphasized the importance of using service facilities with care to prevent damage to infrastructures like internal roads, bridges, culvert, footpaths and others implemented by the LGED under the EMCRP project.
The participants also shared their insights in these events.
Senoara Begum (39), Ward No-4 Sonar para, Jalia Palong Union, Ukhiya, said, "I didn't have proper idea about road, drain and market but today I came to know that it has been developed by LGED, which are our assets. We should use these with care".
Tanjina Khanam (23), Mitapanir chara, Ward-1, Teknaf Sadar Union, Teknaf, said, "I have learned about LGED's infrastructures, we should use it with care."
Noor Nahar (25), Camp 20, said, "I have heard the name of LGED very first time that they provided us many with service facilities. We should take care of those facilities. I'm happy to learn".
Setara (28), from Camp 19, said, "We got many facilities from LGED. The services have been provided to us. We must take care of those otherwise we will have the same problem as before."
Rumi Akter (29), from ward-1, Katakhali Whykong Union, Teknaf, said, "This meeting is informative. From this meeting I came to know something new. It helps me think about my responsibility and I use the service facilities with care".
