DMP Commissioner calls for striker enforcement of laws to check road crashes

DHAKA, June 17, 2025 (BSS) - Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali today asked police personnel to strictly implement existing laws to prevent road crashes.

"We want strict implementation of the existing laws to check road crashes," he said.

The DMP chief was speaking as the chief guest on the concluding day of a two-day workshop organized by GRSP at Hotel InterContinental in the capital here.

He said that establishing traffic discipline on the roads and maintaining law and order in the capital city is a big challenge.

Sazzat also said that if the causes of road crashes are identified correctly, it will play an effective role in reducing road deaths in future.

"Therefore, the skills of police members should be enhanced to investigate any road crash scientifically," he said.

He said that the traffic department is responsible for roads, but the crime department investigates the crash.

In the future, initiatives will be taken to involve the traffic police in investigating such incidents, he said.

The DMP Commissioner said that to prevent road crashes, road users need to follow traffic rules.

Especially, not following the speed limit, sudden lane changes and crossing the road at random places increase the risk of crashes, he said.

The DMp Commissioner said that most road crashes in Dhaka city occur between midnight and morning, when the roads are relatively empty.

Sazzat has called for avoiding political programmes on the roads to ease public sufferings.

"We have requested the top leaders of political parties to avoid political programs on roads. Because such programs bring suffering," he said.

The international organization Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) is providing training to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) officers to enhance their skills in road crash investigation.

The workshop was presided over by Abdul Wadud, Initiative Coordinator of Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) and former Additional Secretary.

Sixty police officers from different units of DMP participated in it.

At the end of the workshop, Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) of DMP Md. Sarwar, handed over certificates to the participants.
