DINAJPUR, June 14, 2025 (BSS) - Five people including three women were killed and 15 others injured in a road accident on the Dinajpur-Gobindaganj regional highway in Nurjahanpur area under Ghoraghat upazila of the district in the early hours of today.
Of the deceased, two were identified as Tamanna Akhter, 24, daughter of Hashem Ali and Aminul Islam, 35, son of Amzad Ali. Both were the residents of Panchagarh sadar upazila.
"The identity of the other deceased could not be known immediately. In addition, all the injured and deceased were the residents of Panchagarh, Dinajpur and Noakhali districts and were passengers of the Nabil Paribahan bus," police said.
The accident occurred when a Dhaka-bound passenger bus of Nabil Paribahan hit a mini truck parked on the road side from behind in the area around 3am. Later, it hit another truck, which was carrying sand, as the driver lost control over the steering, leaving five passengers dead on the spot and injuring 15 others.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ghoraghat Police Station Najmul Haque confirmed the deaths saying: "Three people died on the spot and nine people were taken to the Ghoraghat Upazila Health Complex in critical condition, where on-duty doctors declared two more dead."
"After receiving the news of the accident, police and fire service members rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations. Efforts are underway to identify the other deceased," he added.
Of the wounded, six were shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital this morning as their condition deteriorated.
ANM Niamat Ullah, assistant superintendent of police (Hakimpur-Ghoraghat circle) of the district, said the coach and the pickup van have been taken to the police custody.
"The driver, helper and supervisor of the ill-fated bus fled the scene after the accident," he said, adding that police recovered the bodies and sent those to Dinajpur Medical College and Hospital morgue.
