2 get death in case over killing, dismembering body in Keraniganj

DHAKA, May 29, 2025 (BSS)- A court here today convicted and sentenced two people to death in a case lodged over the murder of one Mofizur Rahman and dismembering his body in 2018 in Beuta area under Taranagar union in Keraniganj.

The two convicts are Maksuda Akter Lucky alias Hasina, 37, and Md Salauddin, 39.

Judge Ishrat Jahan Munni of Dhaka 5th Additional District and Sessions Judge Court pronounced the judgment in the absence of the two convicts, as they went into hiding after coming out of jail on bail. The court tried them in absentia. The court also dropped the name of another accused, Nazrul Islam, from the case as he had already died.

According to the case documents, victim Mofizur Rahman alias Mofiz Kabiraj used to run a shop of fertiliser and insecticides in the Beuta area. He also used to practice Kaviraji, traditional medicines or ayurveda, in the area.

Convict Hasina's husband used to work in Malaysia, and the couple has a boy. Hasina came to Mofiz Kabiraj for traditional medicine for more children, and they engaged in an extramarital affair. Hasina later plotted to kill him out of fear that her husband would come to know about their relationship. She hatched the conspiracy with Salauddin and others and ultimately killed Mofiz.

They later cut his body into 10 pieces and threw those in a pond full of African catfish just beside the Beuta public graveyard, so that the carnivorous fishes devoured the body pieces, eliminating all the evidence of their crimes.

But locals found the limbless body in the pond on February 2, 2018, and alerted the police. Police later filed the case with the Keraniganj Model Police Station and managed to identify the identity of the body. Police on February 20, 2018, arrested the main perpetrators, Hasina and Salauddin, and they later confessed to their crimes.

Police on September 21, 2018, filed the charge sheet against the three. The court today came up with the judgment after examining 19 witnesses on different hearing dates.
