DHAKA, May 27, 2025 (BSS) – The Embassy of Algeria in Dhaka today observed the National Day of the Algerian Muslim Scouts, paying tribute to Mohamed Bouras, the founder of the movement and a national martyr.

The event began with hoisting of the Algerian national flag, followed by the national anthem and a minute of silence in honour of the Scouts’ contributions to Algeria’s liberation and nation-building.

Speaking at the ceremony, Algerian Ambassador Abdelouahab SAIDANI said the day, officially recognised by Presidential Decree in 2021, commemorates the martyrdom of Mohamed Bouras – a patriot, educator, and pioneer who laid the foundation of the Algerian Muslim Scouts.

“On this day, we pause to honour his legacy, reflect on his sacrifice, and celebrate the enduring impact of the movement he so passionately led,” the ambassador said.

Scouting in Algeria, he noted, transcended traditional youth development, playing a transformative role in the country’s struggle for independence. Established in 1935 as “Al-Falah” and renamed the Algerian Muslim Scouts in 1939, the organisation instilled values of patriotism, discipline, resilience, and solidarity among youth.

Bouras was executed by French colonial authorities in 1941, but his vision lived on, inspiring generations of young Algerians. Many Scouts later emerged as prominent figures in the National Liberation Movement that began on November 1, 1954.

Ambassador SAIDANI highlighted that the movement continues to thrive, with over 77,000 active members as of 2021 engaged in development initiatives such as education, infrastructure, and leadership training.

“The legacy of Mohamed Bouras and the Algerian Muslim Scouts remains a guiding light, reminding us to empower our youth and invest in a better tomorrow,” the envoy added.
