DHAKA, May 15, 2025 (BSS) - Students of Dhaka University (DU) staged day-long protests on campus on Thursday, demanding justice for the murder of fellow student Shahriar Alam Shammo.
Under the banner of Students Against Terrorism, demonstrators rejected the university administration's declaration of a half-day mourning on Wednesday, calling it inadequate in light of the tragedy. Instead, the student group called for a complete suspension of academic activities.
As part of the protest, students locked the entrances of all academic buildings, halting all classes and examinations for the day.
A group of students held a protest rally at the foot of the university's Aparajeyo Bangla on Thursday afternoon demanding justice for the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo.
At the rally, Abidur Rahman Mishu, a student of the university's Surja Sen Hall, said, "This administration failed to file a case for the murder of Shammo. How can we trust this administration? There have been two murders on campus in the last nine months. We demand that the campus be made safe for students as soon as possible".
The day of protest concluded with an announcement that special dua (prayers) would be held for Shahriar Alam Shammo following Jumma prayers in all residential halls on Friday.
Earlier in the day, leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal organized a pre-scheduled protest rally in front of the residence of Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan at 11:00am, also demanding justice for Shammo's murder.
