JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, May 15, 2025 (BSS) - Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) of Jahangirnagar University unit today demanded swift and exemplary punishment for those responsible for the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a student of Dhaka University and Literature and Publication secretary of the Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of JCD.
Protesting the killing, around a hundred JCD leaders and activists held a sit-in demonstration at the central Shaheed Minar of Jahangirnagar University around 4pm.
Participants at the demonstration wore black badges and chanted various slogans demanding justice and accountability from authorities.
Speaking at the protest, JU JCD Member Secretary Wasim Ahmed Anik alleged that Shammo's death was the result of a premeditated attack. "This was not just a random violence, it was a deliberate, barbaric assault on a pro-democracy student," he stated.
He also claimed that contrary to some reports, the murder did not take place at Suhrawardy Udyan but within the university premises.
Addressing the event, JU JCD Convener Jahir Uddin Mohammad Babor said, "A university should be a sanctuary for learning, not a battleground. The murder of a bright student like Shammo reflects the utter failure of the university administration."
Babor also expressed concern over the active presence of Chhatra League members on and around Jahangirnagar University campus, which he claimed has made students feel unsafe.
"Although the JUCSU election is approaching, those involved in the July attack-linked to the Chhatra League-are still roaming freely on campus. Disciplinary action must be taken against them before the JUCSU election," he added.
