DHAKA, May 12, 2025 (BSS) - The Detective Branch (DB) of police unearthed the mystery of the murder of two sisters in the capital's Sheorapara at Mirpur within 24 hours of the killings by arresting their nephew for his alleged involvement in the brutality.
The DB personnel in a raid at a house under Sadar Upazila of Jhalakathi district arrested Golam Rabbani Khan alias Taj (14) around 3:30 am on Sunday, said a DB press release.
Following information extracted from the detainee, blood-stained clothes, shoes and other evidence were seized. The evidence included a blood-stained blue T-shirt, two blood-stained jeans (one of which belonged to Taj and one to his cousin Mishti).
Earlier on Friday last, Mariam Begum and her sister Sufia Begum were murdered in a rented house in Sheorapara.
Mariam Begum's daughter filed a murder case with Mirpur Police Station as the complainant in the incident.
DB said that the deceased's own nephew Taj went to the house of his elder aunt Mariam Begum in Sheorapara 2025 around 12.50pm on Friday. His elder aunt (Mariam Begum) was busy entertaining him and younger (Sejo) aunt (Sufia Begum) went to the balcony to wash the plates and bowls.
Taking this opportunity, he stole Tk 3,000 from the wallet kept next to the TV in the elder aunt's room to buy an old bicycle. When the theft was discovered, elder aunt Mariam scolded him and told him to inform his mother and started looking for a mobile phone to call her mother.
At that moment, Taj first hit his elder aunt in the stomach with a lemon-cutting knife on the dining table. Mariam Begum tried to hit him while she was bleeding, but he hit her again.
Hearing his elder aunt's screams, younger aunt (Sufia Begum) came from the next room and tried to stop him, hitting him once in the stomach with the same knife, causing him to fall to the floor.
Then, the accused Taj brought a rock from the kitchen and hit his elder and younger aunts several times on the head.
Then he went to the toilet and cleaned the blood on his hands and face with water. Then he went to the next room and changed his blood-stained T-shirt and jeans and put on a pair of jeans used by his cousin Mishti and another colorful T-shirt and cap from his bag.
Later, he locked the door from outside, took the key, filled a CNG tank and left for Shanir Akhra.
Taj gave confessional statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code when he was produced before the court today.
