DHAKA, May 5, 2025 (BSS) - National Citizens' Party (NCP) deeply understands women's freedom, right to expression, their struggle in society and it (NCP) is firmly committed to the realization of women's dignity and rights.
NCP said this in a press release clarifying the party's stance on the Women's Affairs Reform Commission report today.
According to the release, NCP is united with women in building a new Bangladesh. In post-uprising Bangladesh, a total of 11 reform commissions started working under the initiative of the interim government.
The 'Women's Affairs Reform Commission' was formed on November 18, 2024, which submitted its proposals on April 19, 2025.
Besides, the 'National Consensus Commission' was formed to discuss with all political parties. Six reform commissions under its purview have already started their activities.
However, the Women's Affairs Reform Commission was not under the umbrella of the Consensus Commission.
As a result, all political parties did not get the opportunity to discuss or express their opinions on this issue in advance.
"We are observing that various levels of discussion and disagreement have arisen in the country's political environment surrounding the proposals of this commission," said NCP in the release.
The NCP does not believe that the representation and inclusion of women from all sections of society has been ensured among the members of the Women's Reform Commission.
Concerns have arisen among various religious and social groups regarding some of the reform proposals, the release said.
It is the responsibility of the state to formulate policies while respecting the religious, social and cultural integrity of all communities and being respectful towards the beliefs and social values of all citizens.
Some of the recommendations of the Women's Commission have created a dialectical position of the state with the social and religious values of Bangladesh, pitting society vs. state and religion vs. women.
"We believe that it is necessary to keep the door open for constructive discussions with all representative stakeholders on the issues where disagreements have arisen," NCP added.
While criticizing the proposal, the NCP strongly condemned and protested the ironical and disrespectful public statements against women at various gatherings.
In every struggle in Bangladesh, especially in the student uprising of July-August, women of all classes, professions, religions and castes have played a leading role.
As a result of the extensive participation, leadership and sacrifice of women, the nation was liberated from the fifteen-year-old fascism.
"We will not forget this history," NCP continued.
