CHATTOGRAM, May 2, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said canal digging programme is one of the core pillars of BNP’s politics.

While inaugurating Nazir Khal and Kalir Chara Khal digging and cleanliness programme near Colnel hat bazar under Kattali ward of the city today, Amir Khasru also said, “Digging canal does not merely meant that drainage water, it must ensure flow and discharge of water of a city and we could initiate a different types of economic activities like creating amusement facilities for the people as well as building walkway”.

Uttar Kattali ward unit BNP has taken the canal digging programme voluntarily. Ward unit BNP president Rafiquddin Chowdhury presided over the inaugural function while city mayor Dr Shahadat Hosen spoke at the function as special guest.

City unit BNP president Alhaj Ershad Ullah and former general secretary Abul Hashem Bakkar addressed the event as special guests.

Appreciating the local BNP leaders and workers for launching such a good initiative, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that other units of the party should take such programmes to free the port city from persisting water logging besides CCC initiatives to this end.

“Politics of BNP is not merely centered in slogan and making address as politics of Shaheed President Zia was politics of production and development. So, party leaders and workers should practice and involve themselves in such politics” he said.

Amir Khasru said the movement and struggle have completed. Now time has come to build the country together and BNP was founded to build a prosperous and developed country, he added.

City Mayor Dr Shahadat Hosen said once there were 71 canals in this city but most of them either disappeared or lost their existence for illegal occupation or by filling-up with garbage.

He alleged that CCC was supposed to dig those canals but some dishonest conspirators had given the responsibility to dig those canals to Chattogram Development Authority (CDA).

“Whereas, the CDA had identified 57 out of 71 canals and steps have taken for recovering only 36 canals through digging and removing garbage which means 20 canals will be out of recovery programme,” he said.

“So, city dwellers will not be freed from consistent sufferings of water logging very soon,” he added.
