Tipu for providing facilities for deep sea fishing

DHAKA, July 15, 2021 (BSS) – Commerce minister Tipu Munshi said developing and low-income countries need to be given special benefits in achieving SDGs by adopting policies for deep-sea fishing.

The commerce minister said this while speaking at the 41st meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO) virtual trade negotiating committee on fisheries subsidiary from the secretariat office in Dhaka today, said a press release.

He also said, least developed countries are not responsible for environmental pollution. There is an urgent need to consider the countries that are capable of catching fish on a limited scale, he added.

Large scale industrial fishing vessels are the cause of environmental degradation, he said.

Tipu said Bangladesh wants the policy to be formulated while protecting the interests of developing and low-income countries.

The trade ministers of the (World Trade Organization) WTO member countries are gradually giving their views on formulating policies for deep sea fishing.
