DHAKA, July 13, 2021 (BSS) - The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today commuted the death sentence of one person, convicted and sentenced to death in a case lodged over killing his son, to life imprisonment.
An Appellate Division full bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain pronounced the judgement after holding virtual hearing on the jail appeal filed by the convicted father Shahid Rari.
The apex court also fined him Taka 50 thousand and to suffer two years in default.
Shahid Rari used to live in the house of his in-laws in village Charguni under Dosmina upazila of Potuakhali.
On May 22, 2008, he killed his own son Shakil Hossain to put the blame on the shoulders of his in laws as he was beaten by them on charge of stealing money of his brother-in-law. The case was filed on May 23 and the killer father confessed his heinous crimes before a court.
Potuakhali District and Sessions Judge Court on May 14, 2009, sentenced Shahid to death, making him file a jail appeal against the conviction with the High Court.
The High Court on June 18, 2014, upheld the lower court sentence.
Shahid later filed a jail appeal against the High Court judgement and the apex court today came up with the judgement after holding a hearing on that plea.
