DHAKA, Sept 7, 2026 (BSS)- State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir today underscored the importance of regular exchanges between Bangladesh and Switzerland to further strengthen political, cultural and people-to-people ties.

He said this when Swiss Ambassador to Bangladesh Reto Renggli paid a courtesy call on him at the foreign ministry here, according to a ministry press release.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed ways to broaden bilateral relations, with particular emphasis on trade, investment, skills development and stronger political and people-to-people engagement.

The Swiss envoy congratulated Kobir on his assumption of the office and expressed confidence that the longstanding friendly relations between Bangladesh and Switzerland would further deepen in the coming days.

The two sides explored opportunities to expand bilateral trade and investment, including prospects for greater Swiss investment in promising sectors of Bangladesh's economy.

Recognising economic partnership as a key pillar of Bangladesh-Switzerland relations, they agreed to pursue practical measures to enhance technical and vocational skills development opportunities for the Bangladeshi workforce.

Kobir stressed that regular interactions and exchanges could contribute to broadening bilateral relations beyond economic cooperation by fostering closer political, cultural and people-to-people connections.

Renggli expressed hope that operation of new Bangladesh Embassy in Bern would help further expand the depth and dimensions of bilateral relations.

The two sides also reaffirmed their commitment to shared values, including democracy, human rights, multilateralism, respect for international law and a rules-based international order. They reiterated their willingness to work together in multilateral forums to uphold these values.

Appreciating Bangladesh's generosity in hosting a large number of forcibly displaced Rohingyas, the Swiss ambassador reaffirmed his country's continued support for their voluntary, safe and sustainable repatriation to Myanmar.

He also reiterated Switzerland's commitment to supporting international efforts towards finding a durable solution to the protracted Rohingya crisis.
