CHITTAGONG UNIVERSITY, Sept 6, 2026 (BSS) - The Chittagong University (CU) authorities have suspended the university's Zoology Professor Dr. Mohammad Abdul Wahed Chowdhury for one year over making derogatory remarks about the 2024 July mass uprising on social media.

The authorities have also instructed to form an investigation committee for further inquiry into the case.

The teacher was awarded the suspension at the university's 568th syndicate meeting last Friday, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohammad Al-Forkan told BSS this evening.

Prof Wahed was alleged to have written derogatory remarks with obscene words on his Facebook handle on June 7, 20 and July 3.

The incident sparked widespread criticism across the campus. Later on July 12, the Chittagong University Central Students' Union (CUCSU) submitted a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor demanding exemplary punishment.

On the same day, a three-member probe committee was formed, headed by CU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Dr. Mohammed Al-Amin, with then-acting registrar Prof. Dr. Mohammad Saiful Islam as member secretary and Assistant Proctor Dr. Md. Kamrul Hossain as a member.

Contacted, Prof Wahed said he is yet to receive any official letter on his suspension.

Dr. Abdul Wahed Chowdhury is widely known as a pro-Awami League teacher on the campus. He joined the Zoology Department at CU as a lecturer in 2012, subsequently becoming an assistant professor in 2014, associate professor in 2021 and professor in 2026. He also served as an assistant proctor of the university from 2021 to 2023.
